The Alien

"Insect cuisine is, for Westerners, emblematic of the alien, a threat to our psychological and cultural identity. Yet failure to embrace entomophagy prevents us from seeing the full humanity of those of other classes, races, and cultures, and leads to agricultural and food policy decisions that fail in their objectives to improve nourishment for all people.”

--Heather Looy, Florence Dunkel, John Wood

This is a quote I find very interesting and it summarizes why not practicing entomophagy may be a problem. I think it speaks for itself and I think it is pretty direct.

Recently at my school, one student called a cultural cuisine "nasty." In response, I told her that her view was ethnocentric and I suggested positively acknowledging such cuisines rather than talking down on them. Disrespecting a cuisine can be disrespectful towards the people who enjoy the cuisine. We often end up acting as if we are better than another group of people because we don't have "weird practices." But when you think about it, the world is such a large place and it isn't odd at all for different communities to have different practices. Instead of judging others, we must learn to accept others.
