I think the most valuable thing I got out of this project was my mental development. When I first got my bugs, I could not even stand holding the bag in my hand; I was afraid of touching insects. I had a difficult time getting myself to try the bugs I ordered because I was so afraid. Now, I can eat a whole small bag of mealworms or crickets without a sweat. I see the insects as a tasty snack.
I am very proud of myself for really venturing out of my comfort zone. I was not thrilled to eat insects, especially because I do love meat and fish, but I wanted to try it because I had never done it before. It is so easy to look at someone else and judge him or her for something he or she does or believes. It is so much easier to just not care than to put the effort to understand others. But I put effort into understanding something that was previously foreign to me and the results were rewarding.
As cheesy as this is, you really cannot judge a book by its' cover. Try something and explore something before deciding how you feel about that something. Remember: your world is not the world's world. The world does not center around you; your views are not shared by every other person in the planet. Next time you see someone eating a bug, try not to look at the scene with disgust. Instead, ask questions, get educated, and be open to new ideas.
