First Time Buying Bugs

Updated: Mar 13, 2018

Today, I decided to go online and look for bugs to buy. I checked out multiple websites (I'll put them under the resources page). On all the sites that I looked at, the bugs were priced similarly. The bugs were all a little pricey but not too bad....not too bad until you have to pay for shipping. I bought 6 small bags of whole, seasoned crickets and mealworms and a small bag of cricket powder. With shipping, I spent nearly forty dollars in total, which is not very practical or affordable. Although I was excited to get them, the price did make this process slightly less appealing.

This represents one of the challenges of including insects as a normal part of your diet. In America, bugs are kind of a hipster food. For that reason, it's expensive. Bugs are not the kind of snack and food you can go anywhere and get. They don't sell them at Ralph's or Trader Joe's so you have to order them online and wait for them to come (it requires planning to eat bugs).

One thing I worried about while shopping was the quality of the insects. I didn't want to get insects from a place where they would be of low quality (and possibly get me sick). I stayed away from websites that seemed "sketchy" and I went to the websites that seemed more legitimate. When judging which sites are sketchy and which sites are legitimate, I look for the quality of the website and online reviews of them by previous customers. What website I choose to buy from depends on what I find on it. I ended up buying insects from Ento Market.
